Joss's Buffy always got a lot of stick, particularly towards the end seasons of the series (5,6&7 anyone?!)  for being whiny / preachy / arrogant... She rarely topped any 'favourite character' polls. But she was always my favourite though - you could see how and why Buffy became the way she was, through the experience of becoming an adult, failed relationships and generally growing up. I thought that (one of the many) underlying messages, that leaders aren't always popular, but they should always do what's right. For the show, it was an important message but got lost a little (or should I say it was overdone) by some of the show's writers...That made her unlikeable. But the progression was essential.
I feel like you've demonstrated in AU Buffy how it could have been done with sensitivity and kindness to the character. This Buffy is kind, considerate, stoic in the face of incredible personal sacrifice and loss and incredibly mature. She's also got her head screwed on in the face of an unspeakably difficult situation...

I spent a lot of time thinking about how GfaW Buffy would fair whilst reading FFaG, and felt in my heart of hearts she was much better equipped to deal with the switch than Buffy from FFaG. I think this is being proven -- it makes perfect sense that this Buffy would see that there are ways to adjust and rectify the present. I am looking forward to her realisation that she is 'stuck', and the inevitable melt-down that surely must product (it is after all healthy, and the natural progress of grief). But I think Buffy being in the driving seat here will propel her forward in repairing the relationship with Faith of this universe. I am excited to see this unfold!!

Author's Response:

Thank you! I agree with you. Buffy was always my favorite, even when they wrote her as doing unlikeable stuff, I loved her. The show really did throw a lot of crap at her, didn't it? Alt Buffy's kind of nicer, gentler approach is what I think Buffy would be like with a steady person to back her up and really get her. The Scoobies tried, although obviously had their own issues, but so many times Buffy did the 'it all comes down to me/I am the slayer alone' type schtick. With Faith, she'd never have to, and she fared better for it.

I hope the finding out she can't go scene lives up to the expectations, as well as the other chapters!! :)

Great chapter, kept everything moving forward with pace and development. Really nice to see the crossovers with elements from the show (ie. Willow's growing magick problem)... Interesting to see if this features down the line.

Felt for Buffy here; still amazed she's keeping it together and hasn't cracked. And interested to see how the others react (aside from Tara) when they find out about her and alt Faith. Echo previous comments, Alt Buffy is freaking adorable... Sad to see no one really tapping into how much she's hurting. :-(

CAN'T WAIT for the next chapter!

Author's Response:

She keeps it together pretty well, and to be fair, with the exception of Tara, they don't really know what she's lost. Although perhaps Willow would notice if she didn't have her head up her ass. :) So yes, let's blame Willow! Stupid magic addiction. I hated that storyline, but decided to utilize it a bit here since it works for my purposes. Nefarious purposes of course. :D Thank you very much for the review!! :D Next chapter will be up soon!

I *knew* it wasn't Willow! What is intriguing me now though is what happened last year to plant such strong seeds of doubt in Buffy's mind about her motivations and capabilites... The dynamic between the two 'best friends' is a really interesting sub-current that I'm enjoying as it unravels; has Willow ever truly accepted this Buffy?; has she really gotten over the loss of her friend?; has Buffy forgiven her for coming down so hard against Faith when she first arrived? Lots of background questions...

For what it's worth, I think Faith is right to trust Willow on this. But I can imagine Buffy won't take her 'betrayal' lightly, given they're still in such a tentative state...

Here in the UK, new episodes of Buffy used to air on a Thursday on BBC2. Sort of made me think of that, reading this on a Thursday morning... Thank you!

Author's Response:

Thank you! :) I don't think Buffy would view this as a betrayal really. I think she'll be scared for Faith and upset, but she isn't the General Buffy type that canon Buffy was. She had to share slaying responsibilites and decision making for a big chunk of time, and she's expressed in some of the past chapters that she didn't like being back on her own with everything on her shoulders. Clearly it is in her character to steamroll a bit (smush, there goes Xander!), but she does pull back and listen to Faith, like she did outside Willow's apartment.

As for your questions, chapter 8 covered Willow's past misdeeds and why their relationship was strained even before the re-introduction of Faith. Buffy concluded after their argument that Willow would never accept her or get over losing the 'real' Buffy, which is probably correct. In Flowers, Dawn and Faith had to struggle to adapt to new Buffy, but eventually they did. Willow's struggles with magic really didn't help the situation between them here, and I don't think that either of them is that interested in repairing it. They're friends and care for one another, but each of them misses their real best friend. Plus Buffy's first impression of Willow was Season 6 Willow... I wouldn't want to be her friend! :p

Literally inhaled this series, chapter by chapter.

Ohmigoodness, loved it. Charactertisation, plot, delivery, everything nailed on the head... And I thought the additions of Cam and Sara were really well done; fully fleshed out characters who had more than purpose, they have personality too. Looking forward to seeing more of them in Season 2...

Not convinced Cam doesn't have it bad for Faith though...

And Buffy and Faith are freaking adorable together, in a way that feels completely natural to the vibe of the show. KUDOS.

Really excited to get sucked into seaso 2 now!!

Author's Response:

Hi RC!  I'm so, so happy that you've enjoyed the first part of the series.  It's kind of my pet project, or my baby if you will, I think mostly because of the original characters I included.  The fact that you liked them too just puts me right over the moon.  :)  There will be plenty more of them in the second season, whenever I get around to finishing it anyway!

And yes, there's the rub.  It's still unfinished :(  But!...I'm kind of inspired to work on it lately, so hopefully that'll happen soon.  Thanks so much for stopping by with your thoughts.  Just reading them is a pretty good motivation for me!  :)

Oh my goodness, Jenny!! Really enjoyed this fic; just enough smushyness and just the right amount of angst!

"It's happening again".... hehe...

Side note: when can we expect the next instalment of The Girl From Away? I think I'm suffering from withdrawal...

Author's Response:

Thank you! :) Glad you liked it.

Fear not, your withdrawal will be abated today or tomorrow, depending on when my beta gets back to me. :p

Really enjoyed Faith's characterisation in this chapter and thought the part where she throws her stake over the edge was a nice touch – complex feelings she's wrestling with, it felt very true to form.

Did wonder how you were going to tackle/alter the episode and very satisfied with the outcome!

Looking forward to the next chapter: next up, Gingerbread, right? Mom-centric episode which I loved for all of the emotional complexity. Really eager to see your take, and where/how Faith fits in to the Buffy-Joyce dynamic, maybe even raising some more of Faith's own mommy-issues?... Good work :-) and thank you!

Author's Response:

Thanks, I had great fun with the Angel/Faith climax. I really think these two characters click, in a non-romantic way.

I'm glad you liked that I played around with the whole Buffy/First dynamic, a lot of people seemed to have enjoyed that.

Ah...no, not Gingerbread. The thing is Gingerbread is a really good mystery (I actually quite like the episode, nice twists and lots of good stuff about censorship, wheter Buffy is really making a difference, etc.) but the second time around Buffy will figure things out in seconds and fill in Giles...monster taken care of. As a writer I couldn't think of a way to make it interesting, sorry.

However, fear not, there will be some juicy Faith-Joyce stuff coming up in Helpless, plus the two slayers are in for a rough time...
